Classroom Newsletter

February 2013

Math News

We have begun Unit 6 in our Math Expressions series.  Please continue to read the Family Letters which are sent home at various times throughout each unit.  Please continue to review and practice addition and subtraction facts as well as make sure that any homework is completed.

Literacy News

Please continue to read the Home School Connection letter that is sent home every Friday.  This letter outlines the various skills that your child will be working with each week.  Included are additional activities that can be practiced at home.  Also included are the high frequency words that will be focused on each week, as well as the spelling words and robust vocabulary (both found on the back of the letter).

Please practice spelling words with your child every night.  The words are gradually becoming more challenging.  Have fun practicing with Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe!  Be sure to remind your child to use all lowercase letters when printing his/her spelling words.  Please encourage your child to read each and every night.  Ask your child questions about the books he/she reads.  Have him/her tell you his/her favorite part.  Ask about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end.  Talk about the characters, setting, and main idea.  Through this discussion, your child will become an even better reader!

Science News

We have had so much fun exploring solids and liquids.  Students were actively engaged as they worked in groups: predicting, exploring, investigating, and then recording their findings in their Science Notebooks!  Ask your child about the fun we had learning about solids and liquids.

100th Day

Can you believe that we have been together for over 100 days?  The days certainly have flown by, and we took the 100th day to celebrate! We participated in 100th day activities with all of our 1st grade friends, and learned even more by participating in 100th day centers with the 1st grade teachers!  It was a fun day!

Dental Health Month

February is National Dental Health Month.  We will soon begin reading about teeth and learning healthy habits to take care of our teeth.  We will learn the importance of brushing and flossing our teeth, and the importance of eating healthy foods to keep our beautiful smiles healthy and white.

Helping Hands…

If you would like to donate to our classroom, we could use the following:

·         Kleenex
